I keep all of my "X-mas" decorations, including ornaments in those semi-clear plastic boxes that unfold at the top, but the lid is permanently attatched (I hate mushed lids and lost lids). Sometimes around Xmas, you can get them with red lids, but most of the time they are black, or dark green. I wait for the red ones and pick up a few more each time. Then, when I say to the kids or hubby, can you bring up the xmas decor....they know exactly which boxes to bring up, the ones with the red lids. It worked so well, that I later bought the black lids for Halloween and Thanksgiving (since they are so close), and then used the dark green for Easter. Color coding works wonders for basement storage, also since they are plastic, they are protected from water.
: I am writing an article about how various people store their Christmas ornaments and would love some input from anyone out there.
: So far I have info about these types of ornament boxes:
: 1. The elegant fabric covered boxes that are acid free and retail for anywhere from $60 to $135 and store up to 64 ornaments.
: 2. The chest-of-drawer type box that has individual drawers of various sizes that you pull out and remove. These retail for about $32 and store up to 164 ornaments of various sizes. (ie Santa's Drawers)
: 3. The chest type boxes that are often found in catalogues and places like Walmart that retail for about $5. These have several layers of dividers stacked one on top of the other and store maybe 60 or 70 ornaments.
: 4. Some people have has good luck with boxes from the liquor store that are divided for liquor bottles. They can wrap and stack several ornaments in each section.
: 5. Rubbermaid (and others) make an ornament storage box out of plastic that
: has several layers of dividers that are separated by large flat pieces of cardboard. You remove one layer to get to the next and they are similar in shape to the chest in example #3.
: If anyone has knowledge of other types of boxes or methods of storage, please email me and let me know. I would really appreciate your input and I may even quote you in my article! Thank you very much.
