The first thing you do is carve out a apace that you can keep uncluttered, like the living room -- or a part of it. This is so you"ll have a place to escape from the mess. If you have room, use some empty boxes to sort into: out-of-season clothes, Christmas stuff, etc. Go through one box at a time, putting away as much as possible so you don't have piles of stuff everywhere. It also helps if you plan where everything will go: which drawer for silverware, which closet shelf for suitcases (which you can store your out-of-season clothes in) etc. I hope this helps.
