Organizing a Playroom

First off...let me say this is a GREAT site! I found it surfing the net today...and I love it! What wonderful ideas!

Now..here's my problem:

We have a basement (finished) that is a family room/playroom. The room is very long, and so half of it has been divided off to make a bedroom for my son. The other half has a sofa, telivision, and a chair, plus toys toys toys! :) Right now, my kids basically have free run of the room...it's mostly a playroom.
I'd really like to be able to both have a family room and also a place where the kids can play. But it's almost always a disaster down there...the kids have toys all over the place. I've tried boxes with pictures (my kids are just learning to read)...I've tried shelving, I've even tried just putting two large plastic storage containers down there and making them pick up after they are done. Nothing seems to be working...and I'm tired of the mess and not being able to use my family room!

HELP! :) I have a VERY limited budget...but I would appreciate any suggestions for making this space a livable place for all of us!
