Hi Peg,
I'm writing because I used to worry about the same thing as you. What I learned is that you need to be yourself and not ask others what you're supposed to be doing. It's more important to do what you feel is important rather than what others think is important. If you do what you think others think is best, you will not be happy and you and those you love will suffer. Ten years from now, it's not going to matter what your house looked like, but it will matter how you lived your life with those you love.
It sounds as if you want your house to be neater. For me, I have to be in a certain mood to get things neater and organized and that means seeking inspiration. The web, books and magazines are great for inspiration. Or, a visit to one of your neat friends house could be inspiration. I just got back from vacation and being in a neat a clean hotel room for 3 days and nights inspired me (on top of the fact I got a break)
If you would like to be pen pals on the subject, please let me know. I'm hoping that will give me some inspiration later when I need it!
Take care,
Monica
