: Hmmm, I am a tad confused here.... if the drawer only opens 1/2 way now -- it sounds like it has nothing to do w/the tracks. So I question replacing them.

On better file cabinets, the drawer runs on a fairly complex system of what looks like three tracks--one on the cabinet housing, one on the drawer, and a third that interlocks with both, so you can roll the drawer almost all the way out and it's still supported. Mine seem to be a simpler two-track system.

: What I would suggest is to change the way you use the drawer ... Have you thought of investing in another file cabinet to keep the "not so frequently used files"? The reason I mention this is because the average person refers to 20% of their files 80% of the time...

Point well taken. I do need to weed the desk file drawers.

As a matter of fact we have two 2-drawer file cabinets now, but I'm thinking of getting another one with 4. (We have 5 kids, one of them a disabled adult--which generates a lot of paperwork in itself, much of which has to be kept as documentation for benefits, etc.), plus I moonlight as a teacher and we're both writers in our so-called "spare time"--so there's a lot of paper in our house!

: ... remember -- you get what you pay for. The Costco/Kmart versions will not withstand the test of time (or weight)!

Very true. Luckily we live near two warehouses that sell used office furniture and equipment, much of it still in fine condition. We can get a good used cabinet for the price of a shoddy new one, or for even less. I think I've read a plug for used office equipment somewhere in this site--I second it.
