A book called 'File, Don't Pile" recommends a numerical system for storage of clothing, among other things. Essentially, obtain recycled paper boxes or boxes with connected lids. As you sort and fill each box, keep a computer or index record of the contents by numbering the box and numbering the card as you go. Be sure to put sizes briefly and determine instantly what boxes go to consignment. Start earning money - I have never had anyone tell me they saw something given to me on a consignment rack. I have also noted it is helpful to save sizes of particularly special clothes for another child by name. Season and anticipated size is important. If you wind up three years, consign.
