Organizing Accounting - Accounts Payable Files

FILE BY CHECK NUMBER OF CATEGORY OF PAYMENT? Advice wanted. Can see benefit of both. It takes less time to file by check number and can look up on my system by vendor the check number if I needed to. However, if I needed to pull all phone bills I would have to research all the check numbers and look them all up. However, if I file by category then I have to worry about filing so many places I figure I may forget where I file the information anyway. Also it seems if someone calls about a specific check number I could go to it quicker in my file if things were filed by check number. Your advice is appreciated
