Aloha Chris...

<<< ....Any suggestions for keeping the family meeting on track, positive and not a gripe session.

Chris have you created an agenda for the meeting? Hand one out to each of them to assist staying on track :)

Also, here something you may be interested in:

Knowing that people can voice their *opinions* is important. Yet gripe sessions setract from the mission of the meeting. What you are looking for is co-operation & constructive criticism to refine the way things are done. Not blaming people....

So here is what you do: If someone has a complaint it needs to be stated to the person in question...succintly...not too wordy so the point is missed. After the complaint is voiced they have a to also include a “request for change.”

Barb says: Joanie, it bothers me when you leave all your dirty cloths in the bathroom after a shower & I have to walk all over them. My request for change is that you pick up your cloths after you are done in the bathroom.

Do you see the difference? This REALLY works!!! You get to say WHAT bothers you...WHY it bothers you & HOW to remedy it!!

Give it a shot & let me know what happens.

<<< About 20% of them get sidetracked, and take over an hour with all the kids and their schedules ....should I split up the kids ie younger vs older? Seems the younger ones get bored with all the older's schedule needs and then we end up losing everyone.

What are the age bracket of the kids Chris?? In the interim it sounds like a plan to me. Have everyone start the meeting at the same time. Dismiss the older kids first for 20 min. To work w/the younger ones (it’ll be harder to get their attention if you let them go play & expect them to come back)

Have the older kids come back (usually if they can go have a snack you won’t lose them) just be in agreement that they need to come back punctually ...when they do have a positive incentive for them -- don’t do a negative.

<<< It's the calendaring that takes the most time.

Give the kids blank schedules prior to the meeting -- everyone COMES to the meeting prepared this way & it ought to cut down on the time element :)

<YES!!! That is why an agenda helps & coming prepared for the meeting. Believe me many managers do not know how to run a meeting because they never had guidelines earlier. Also make your meetings so you have a start & end time -- that’ll help too!

Hope this helps!!
