One section is 4' the other is 6' w/a 30" corner. The frequently used manuals etc... are stored in a cabinet system on the shorter side of the L above & off the desktop surface. Keep in mind that your work area is considered "prime real estate". Therefore if it is on the surface ..it MUST be an essential item that is used repeatedly. If not...it needs another home! A pencil holder, stapler, phones, answering systems, rolodex, 2 halogen lights, a wire basket system (to hold papers), & a miniature organizer w/drawers- slats- 2 shelves & hidden drawer ALL occupy my "prime real estate in a very organized fashion....w/TONS of room for spreading out paperwork with a projects given demands. The idea is to use a product that has a small *footprint* that can maximize your space. Also keep in mind that *drawers* are essential!!! My workstation had no drawers...yet I was able to purchase a 3drawer system that slides underneath the workstation. This gave me 2 drawers for constantly used supplies that I did not want OUT, (yet VERY easily accessible!) as well as a file drawer to handle on-going projects. The wire basket system I referenced is created by Fellowes & is the MOST ingenious system I have ever found -- not to mention durable!!! {see our Library section for details...it was one of our FIRST Hot Picks!} For constant project reference files...check out the FlexSort system {see orders to go} It is a reasonably priced & very handsome system that can accomodate the most ferocious schedule of work in progress!! Maureen, you are on the right track...think vertically...not horizontally to meet your needs. Utilize cabinet systems w/sliding doors to hide the frequesntly used reference materials. In my experience, it may be financially wiser to have a carpenter create PRECISELY what I need for my clients, rather than hunt some of the office stores for something that will just "get you by". Remember, whatever you do is an investment in YOU!! Take your time & do it wisely ...& it will repay you for years to come!!!
