Hi! Sally
Years ago Quill Corp. offered a booklet called "How to File and Find It" in their Business Library. Don't know if it is still available, but it gives you the rules for alphabetical filing. Lots of other suggestions for storage, folder arrangement, and file retention. I have a phone no. of (312)634-4850. Area code might be different now. Mailing address for suggestions in content was also included as: Editor-Quill Business Library, Quill Corp., 100 Schelter Rd., Lincolnshire, IL 60069.

To be more specific, alphabetize files in unit-by-unit order. Each word or set of capital letters is one unit. ABC Printing Co. would be (3) units (ABC is one unit). Ignore punctuation, thus ABC Printing Co. & A.B.C. Printing Co. are the same. Then you would file those two by city. Also AB Printing would come before ABC Printing because AB would come before ABC. Hyphenated words are considered one unit.

For your attorneys, you should use the last name by which to file, ie., Sams, Larry, Attorney at Law - Jones, Paul, Insurance Agency

And, one of the best examples is the telephone book.

Hope this helps.
