Several years ago I read that womens garments used to be buttoned in the back. They were done in mirror image of mens buttons, because it was supposedly easier to insert the button on the right side, into the button hole on the left side. When womens buttons started coming to the front, they just stayed mirror image. I heard that because men used to have servants to dress them. They would face the servants and the servants would button their clothes.
