What to do with all those old photos?

I have many old photos of the family and extended family. My mother died four years ago and I have finally started to tackle those boxes of photos. I have done a preliminary sort and have quite a few pictures I don't want - either because I can't figure out who they are or there are so many of the same event, subject, etc. The problem is that I have a terrible time throwing them in the trash. Any ideas?
