Great post by the way -- I am sure that many visitors can identify w/your dilemma -- even if it's not on such a large scale! :) OK....first of all you are on the right track to go room-by-room & concentrate on ridding as you say: *the garbage*. When you have decluttered what is not valuable, useful or in working order it will be MUCH clearer to see the next stages!! You mentioned putting things in the basement already -- well the key here would be to pick a section of the basement based on what/how you are going to deal w/the items. Avoid glomping it all together just to get it out of the upstairs living area. I see 6 categories from what you have stated thusfar & *1* I want to toss your way for thought: BTW: As far as ham radios -- do NOT just trash those items. Now I am not a *collector* per say...yet I bet you would be AMAZED at the value of some of the *old things* you have in the home -- so head directly to E-bay w/those items!!!!! Delegate this task to a family/friend who is computer savvy & it will help you out tremendously! What I might start doing is making NUMEROUS piles or boxes of items for the various categories I listed above... ie: Segregate all the items that you want family members to be able to collect in one area...& then YES!! give them a timeline as to WHEN it has to be picked up -- if they don't show -- put it in the estate sale or donate area. Now I am not sure how valuable some of the items may be w/out seeing anything...yet if they are just regular household items -- you would make out far better donating them. I'd save the *known valuables* for Ebay or the Estate sale. If you choose the donation route -- I highly recommend you visit our "kool organizing tools" section & order the "Ca$h for Clothes" booklet so you take the REAL value of the item as your deduction (ex: did you realize that a hardback book in good condition is worth $8 when donated???) Most people claim way too little when they donate items btw! Also...I would highly recommend donating ANY computer equipment or extra TV's to a local school -- they usually need it badly & you would be doing a great service :) Jim...how about you do some of the sorting as I have suggested & re-post another msg on your progress ...tell me where you are stumped & we'll move on from there! Hope this helps & ...keep us posted! Much Aloha, Julie Signore -
